Overview

The Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) is responsible for the processing and packaging/shipping of sendout laboratory samples. Additional duties include processing of referred testing, reporting and verifying of results, and billing of patient. Each educated employee is expected to be a resource to the extent of their training and experience. All employees are expected to be a supportive link between customers and reference laboratories.

Schedule: Full Time, 11:00AM-7:30PM with rotating weekends and holiday on call.

Responsibilities
    Demonstrates the technical and computer skills required in the laboratory.
    • Accurately processes referral specimens, maintains records, prepares and transmits reports, completes billing of patient and pending logs
    • Processes specimen samples for storage
    • Retrieves stored samples from lab departments to add-on sendout testing, as requested
    • Maintains knowledge of processing protocols and understands how to obtain basic information related to testing criteria
    • Performs routine and safety program checks and preventive maintenance on instrumentation
    • Provides accurate and complete documentation in every regard
    • A ssists in process development/improvement within the department
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and upholds applicable laws and regulations related to position.
    • Wears appropriate personal protective gear and uses a face shield/ goggles when aliquoting a sample
    • Participates in continuing education programs
    • Performs and documents daily, weekly and monthly tasks on work area task lists
    • Follows lab-wide and sendout policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate with staff, patients, parents and clients.
    • Will be able to present information through oral or written communication effectively
    • Continuously be the best at providing customer service in an efficient and effective manner to assure customer satisfaction and quality patient care
    • Maintain and foster interpersonal relationships with internal and external customers
    • Demonstrate the ability to change manner of communication styles to adapt to various cultural differences

    • Assists in training new employees technical procedures and protocols as applied

    • Maintains basic understanding of testing principles and processes
    • Maintains knowledge of techniques, procedures, and protocols
    • Acts as a resource to non-laboratory personnel and other customers
  • Demonstrates the ability to make determinations regarding course of action and alternatives.
    • Addresses client concerns by researching problems and identifying resolutions, using basic troubleshooting skills
    • Demonstrates the ability to handle conflict with irate staff/clients/physicians
    • Demonstrates the ability to adjust to change, handle interruptions and function with changing circumstances
    • Demonstrates initiative; suggests ways to streamline/improve or update operations in Sendouts
    • Demonstrates the ability to work efficiently and independently promoting a team environment and maintaining a cooperative and supportive atmosphere
  • Other special projects as assigned by the Technical Specialist, Supervisor, or Manager.
  • Takes rotating weekends and on-call for department operations.
Qualifications

Education Requirement:

  • Associate's degree in medical laboratory technology; or a chemical, physical or biological science from an accredited institution.
  • Certifications: American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification, preferred.
